Rio Salado World Shoot Qualifier 2007
Mesa, AZ
First major match of the year, nothing like trying to warm up the shooting year by aiming to get a spot on the official US Production Team for the upcoming World Shoot in Bali. The match was held at Rio Salado, which is one of my all time favorite places to shoot. Steve Horsman put on a great match, it was really a lot like what you would see at the World Shoot itself. We had to engage difficult swingers, tough, tight shots and hard leans around barricades and difficult shooting positions. I really liked the last couple of stages we shot which was a barricade stage where we had to go prone and a stage with some retreating. My teammate and friend Angus Hobdell was going to be very tough to beat, especially at his home turf. Angus gave up ground early in the match and tried to play catchup, I stayed focused on accuracy and came out the match with the win. Since we had nothing to do the 2nd day of the match, we reshot it just for fun as Mickey Mouse and Goofey Dude and ended up on Emmanuel Bragg and Ted Puente's squad. Another fun day of shooting that culminated in the four of us doing an accelerated round of sporting clays with a CZ Woodcock and an FN shotgun after the match. We found that it is possible for 4 very talented shooters to miss every single bird at a station, much to the amusement of the other 3 not shooting...
